UK Law on Tarot

UK Law on Tarot

There is now no law specifically addressing Tarot reading or Fortune-Telling in the UK. All trade is covered under the Consumer Protection Regulations which do not mention anything at all specifically with regard to divination in any form.

The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 came into force on 26 May 2008. They implement the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD) in the UK, and replace several pieces of consumer protection legislation that were in force prior to 26 May 2008. One of which is the Fraudulent Mediums Act (which in turn replaced the Witchcraft Act) which was revoked in this new regulation.

The Regulations introduce a general duty not to trade unfairly and seek to ensure that traders act honestly and fairly towards their customers. They apply primarily to business to consumer practices (but elements of business to business practices are also covered where they affect, or are likely to affect, consumers).

Please consider joining Tarot Professionals for membership benefits including a 30-page guide to the CPR, fair trading, ethics, and the advertising codes of practice (print and broadcast media which are dealt with separately) which apply to Tarot reading.
